Why were wigs (or hairpieces) worn in the Middle Ages?

2 min read

Wearing a wig in the modern sense (as in the 17th or 18th century) didn't really exist yet in the Middle Ages. But false hair, hairpieces, and hair coverings were indeed used, and they met very specific needs 👇

📜 1. To conceal hair loss or diseases

  • Poor hygiene conditions and certain diseases (such as ringworm or the plague) often caused hair loss.
  • Nobles, religious figures, and even some bourgeois would then use hair additions to hide baldness and maintain a dignified appearance.

👑 2. A symbol of wealth and social status

  • Aristocratic women wore long, sometimes artificial, hairstyles made of natural hair or animal fibers.
  • The more elaborate and voluminous the hairstyle, the more it demonstrated wealth and social rank.
  • Some hairpieces were dyed or scented to enhance the luxurious effect.

🙏 3. Religious influence and modesty

  • In certain medieval Christian cultures, it was considered indecent for a married woman to show her hair.
  • Women therefore wore veils, hennins, or coifs, sometimes reinforced with false hair, to give a voluminous appearance while respecting religious codes.

⚔ 4. Knights and helmets

  • For practical reasons, some men shaved their heads to wear their helmets more easily.
  • They could use rudimentary hairpieces or wigs outside of combat to maintain an appearance consistent with their status.

🔍 Historical nuance

  • The white powdered wigs as we know them are an invention of the 17th century (Louis XIV in France, Charles II in England).
  • In the Middle Ages, we spoke more of hairpieces, hair additions, and coifs, but the function remained the same: to hide, beautify, and assert one's rank.

🎯 Conclusion

The wig in the Middle Ages was not yet the sophisticated accessory of later centuries, but it already existed in the form of false hair and hairpieces. It served both aesthetic, social, religious, and practical reasons.
