Replacement hair, wigs, caps, scarves, beanies, turbans... are sometimes essential items after chemotherapy or an illness causing hair loss. How doeshealth insurance cover the costs of the procedure? How can you get the maximum reimbursement? We tell you everything:
The people eligible for reimbursement or coverage areadults or children who are being monitored for an illness or are undergoing treatment and who have:
If you are among them, we will explain how to get your medical wig, cancer wig, or even a chemo wig, or simply your medical wig – whatever your need, we try to help you get a free wig, a men's wig, or an affordable wig, or even inexpensive accessories like turbans.

To be eligible for coverage for a women's/men's wig or even for accessories such as chemo scarves, turbans, women's chemo beanies, or others, you will needa prescription from either:
For your first wig, you must go to an approved specialized retailer. They will fill out a claim form for you to submit to your health insurance for coverage.
For your first wig, it is necessary to go to a store for mandatory fittings, as required by health insurance.
Your wig will need to meet certain criteria, such as the size of the implanted tulle fabric, whether it's a synthetic wig or a natural hair wig, which will naturally influence the price range and determine full or partial coverage and reimbursement of the hairpiece. However, we prefer to tell you that 100% custom-made wigs are not covered. So, be sure to ask the professional assisting you what reimbursement options are available and if a long hair wig and a short hair wig, or if based on hair type, the wig can be in the same price range.
For renewals, you can purchase a wig online and send your invoice and prescription to your health insurance provider.

Because we know that during regrowth or, unfortunately, if the battle isn't over after 1 year, you may want to renew your hair prosthesis or wig. For renewal, it's simple:renewal is possible every 12 months. You just need to get a new prescription from the doctor who provided the initial prescription for coverage. Renewal can be done with an affordable wig online within the reimbursement price range.
For the reimbursement of a hair prosthesis or wig, there are two different classes that depend on animplanted percentage (or cm²) of the wig. Therefore, reimbursement changes according to these classes. Here are the criteria for each class:
If you want a scarf, beanie, turban, or other, you can purchase up to a maximum of €40 to be100% covered by health insurance (without taking a wig), to have 3 accessories that do not exceed €20 each.
And partial hair prosthesis reimbursement (fringe, hairband...) with an accessory is covered up to a maximum of €125.

If you have a Class 1 wig, the question does not arise, but if you have a Class 2 wig, you will need to know how much your mutual insurance is capable of covering and therefore how much you will have to pay out of pocket.
To find this out, you should consultyour contract with your mutual insurance company; a section is normally reserved for this type of case. If you cannot find it, we advise you to call your mutual insurance company directly.
Your mutual insurance will probably talk to you in terms of percentage:
Example: 200% of the price of the wig, which costs €700. So they cover €350, plus the €250 covered by health insurance, leaving €100 for you to pay out of your own pocket.
Don't miss the opportunity to pay the least possible for your wig and to get a cheap wig or even a free wig. We know that it can be psychologically and financially difficult at times, so if you can relieve yourself of financial problems during this stressful phase of cancer or sudden alopecia, a hair or scalp problem, or anything else, seize the opportunity!
